In mathematics North America places 56 universities in the top 100, the same number as in 2011. Europe has 31, Asia and Pacific 7 and the Rest of the world (ROW) 6. In physics, North America has 51, followed by Europe with 35, Asia Pacific with 11 and ROW with 3. The top 100 in chemistry include North America with 49, Europe with 26, 3 less than in 2011, Asia Pacific with 23, 2 more than in the previous year, and ROW with 2. In computer sciences North America places 58 in the list, Europe 20, Asia Pacific 17 and ROW 5. Economics and business is dominated by North America with 80 universities in the ranking, followed by Europe with 15, Asia Pacific with 4 and ROW with 1. North America gained 3 slots, one in each of  chemistry, computer science and economics/business. The percents changed slightly year over year, North America gaining 1 point to 59% of the total slots, followed by Europe 25%, Asia Pacific 12% and ROW 3%.

The ranking of world top 100 universities by subject matter and by region in 2012 records the absolute dominance of North America academia in all the 5 disciplines considered here, by placing a total of 294 institutions, or 59% in percent terms, in the list. North American universities progress forward in chemistry, computer science and economics/business at the expenses of Europe and Asia Pacific. Europe comes second with 127 or 25%. Asia and Pacific are third with 62 or 12%, and the rest of the world amounts to 3%.

Although with strong presences in all disciplines, North American universities have the strongest presence in economics / business, where they place 79 universities among the world top 100. For good or for evil, the fact may be interpreted as a signpost of the global preeminence of American ideologies in the realm of economics and business management.

Physics (35), mathematics (31) and chemistry (26) are the disciplines where European universities have the best presence. The universities of Asia and Pacific are more often listed in chemistry (23), computer sciences (17) and physics (11).
