XY scatter chart showing the academic ranking of world universities in clinical medicine and pharmacy in 2011. The United States place 54 universities in the list of top 100 — 2 less than in 2010 — , followed by the United Kingdom with 11, Canada and Germany with 5 each, and the Netherlands with 4. As a region, North America gets 59 slots, and Europe 34. The remaining 7 are shared by Asia and Pacific (6) and Brazil (1). In per capita terms, small countries occupy the top 5 positions, Sweden in the lead with a score of 32.2, followed by Switzerland, Netherlands, Singapore and Belgium in this order.

In 2011, the United States lost 2 slots in the list of top 100 universities in clinical medicine and pharmacy, but with a total of 54 institutions in the list, they come head and shoulders ahead of Europe, which has 34 universities in the list. The rest of the world counts 7, 6 in Far East and Pacific, and 1 in Brazil.

The per capita ranking is headed by Sweden and Switzerland. However, most of the countries are placed above the average (red line) suggesting a strong emphasis placed on this scientific field by a sizable group of countries.

Crisis or no crisis, the drugs industry is a thriving business whose key players are headquartered in these countries. This may help understand why knowledge in the field is so important there. The surprise may come from the fact that neither China nor India are yet in the top 100 list. And yet the two giants are nowadays essential global players in the production of drugs, especially in the generics category.
