In per capita terms, Switzerland is first with an index of 39.5, followed by Belgium 28.5, Netherlands 24.2, Sweden 21.5 and Finland 18.7. The latter group of small countries are placed above the median (18.2) and the average (red line). The United States, notwithstanding their absolute performance, remain just close to the median and the average in per capita terms.

The United States place 57 universities in the top 100 list, 1 more than in 2010. With Canada's 4, North America is dominant in the academic field of life and agriculture sciences. Europe as a whole takes 32 slots. Australia and Japan fill in the remaining 7 slots.

Switzerland with 3 universities — 1 less than in 2010 — in the 100 list gets an index of 39.5, twice the median of 18.2, and neatly commands the per capita ranking. Its is followed by other small European countries and Australia. The USA have a per capita index of 17.9 just below the the median and right on average (red line).
