Chart and statistics of US deaths of military personnel per 100,000 between 1980 and 1999. The trend is downwards, at an annual average rate of -3.9%, from 117 deaths per 100,000 in 1980 to 55 in 1999. The operations in Afghanistan upset the trend. The US forces had 478 deaths per 100,000 in 2008, and the NATO coalition 157 deaths per 100,000 in 2009.

The US forces succeeded in lowering the number of deaths in the operations they have engaged at the average annual rate of -4% (halving time of 18 years) between 1980 and 1999. In 1980 they had 117 deaths per 100,000 personnel, and only 55 deaths per 100,000 in 1999. The war in the Middle East and Central Asia totally upset this trend. US soldiers are not safe any more. In 2008, the US forces had 478 deaths per 100,000 in Afghanistan. This country is proving to be a deadly trap also for the NATO-ISAF (North Atlantic Treaty Organization - International Security Assistance Force) troopers that have 157 deaths per 100,000 in 2009 (January through July) (see also Afghanistan war casualties).
