Motor vehicles changed the face of the world in the 20th century. Under the banner of Ford and General Motors, the US car industry rendered motor vehicles an ubiquitous, trivial and desire-loaded feature of everyday life in all affluent nations. In the beginning of the 21st century, passenger cars are as common place and as intrusive as ever, but the historical Detroit-based leaders are a mere shadow of their glorious pasts. Japanese constructors overtook them from a business viewpoint, while European brands haunt the dreams of car lovers.
