As predicted, Samuel Sanchez is the winner of the "king of the mountains" trophy in the 2011 Tour de France. He is followed by Andy Schleck with 98, Jelle Vanendert with 74, Cadel Evans with 58, Frank Schleck with 56, and Alberto Contador with 51 points.

The chart clearly shows the riders hierarchy. A dozen or so of the riders achieve great performances in the mountain stages, but the majority lags behind. Among the best climbers, one finds the men who led the race : Evans, the Schleck brothers, Contador, Sanchez. However, as Evans demonstrated beyond doubt, being a fast sprinter is an additional requirement for the aspirant Tour winner.

The mountain climber leader wears the "maillot à pois rouges" (polka dot jersey) that identifies the king of the mountains.
