Grand Prix winners are obligatorily fast drivers, but not necessarily the fastest. Regularity, good care of the racing equipment, and expert management of the key resources of their cars are at least as important as pure speed. Nevertheless, F1 aces not only win the races, but also tend to get, when needed, the highest speed from their cars, as witnessed by the number of fastest laps they score. The super champion Michael Schumacher has a track record of 76 fastest laps, of which 10 in a single season, driving a Ferrari car in 2004. The Finnish Räikkönen accomplished 43 fastest laps, and succeeded in scoring twice 10 in a single season, in 2005 and 2008. The British Lewis Hamilton, who in 2016 yielded the championship crown to his team mate Nico Rosberg, is challenging his elders' supremacy. having already scored 31 fastest laps, of which 8 in 2015. The chart shows by a blue horizontal line the average number of fastest laps performed, and by a red line the average number of fastest laps in one season.
