Vettel's two consecutive victories in Brazil and Abu Dhabi, combined with Alonso's nonperformance in the last Grand Prix of the season, allowed Vettel to collect the necessary points to become the 2010 Formula 1 champion. Vettel scored one more 4th position than Alonso, and one 6th position, against two 7th, one 8th and one 9th by his direct follower. Not a big gap actually, but enough to let the young Vettel win his first champion's crown.
