On a semi log graph, US debt is behind the GDP, but it is closing in steadily, moving from 57%7 in 2001 to 72%2 of GDP in 2008

Huge national debt is not an insurmountable hurdle per se. Panic is not justified if the US economy grows faster than national debt, and interest rates are lower than the economic growth rate. Sadly, the nation is facing an economy recession, and debt is moving at a faster speed than GDP (gross domestic product), as shown by the same data plotted on a semi log graph.
