Tour de France 1933-2016 : Best individual climbers | By nation |

areppim bar chart and statistics of the Tour de France king of the mountains competition. The Tour de France 5 best climbers are Virenque, France, with 7 "King of the Mountains" awards plus one second and one third places; Bahamontes, Spain, and Van Impe, Belgium, with 6 wins and one second each; Jimenez, Spain, with 3 wins, one second and one third; Merckx, Belgium, with 2 wins, 3 second and one third places. Ten other riders won twice and 33 won once the climbers' prize.

For becoming a champion climber you need lots of physical strength, endurance and a gutsy behavior — including readiness to take innovative performance boosting drugs, with disregard to their harmful effects on the subject's health — , and yet those assets do not guarantee the final overall victory in the Tour. Virenque is a case in point. The rider, indicted for alleged unintentional doping (Virenque is the supposed author of the thereafter popular moronic French phrase "à l'insu de mon plein gré", meaning something like willingly but unaware), was crowned King of the Mountains 7 times, but never won the Tour. However, a well-rounded biker such as Merckx, excelling in all specialties, had the spirit, the strength and the skills to finish number one in mountainous or flat terrain, in sprints and in time trials, as a young and as a seasoned rider.
